As Synergi celebrates 9 years of helping businesses digitise and transform their key operations in a secure and affordable manner, we want to look back on how the digital and business landscapes have evolved over this period. Not only have we seen a great increase in organisations harnessing digital business tools (particularly over the past few years of lockdowns) but we have also seen the available technologies develop and evolve. But what were some of the more notable trends and transformations?

The Rise of The Citizen Developer

With low-code/no-code automation tools, such as those available within the Power Platform and Nintex suite, becoming more user-friendly and mobile friendly across the last 9 years we have seen more organisations embrace automation. The increased ease of use of these drag-and-drop automation tools allows for non-technical departments and teams to own their processes, creating workflows, document templates, and mobile apps in a matter of clicks, with simple connectors allowing them to integrate with other key process tools.

This empowerment of the non-technical individual allows them to take the onus off IT departments. Innovated Process Mapping

As process automation has become a higher priority for organisations, attention has turned to process mapping. A significant moment from the past 9 years was Nintex’s acquisition of business process management tool, Promapp, in 2018, illustrating industry leaders’ belief that modern process mapping was and is quickly becoming a vital business tool. Promapp offers a collaborative, centralised, and customisable hub of process knowledge and visualisations, supporting continued efficiencies, automation and process improvement for businesses.

Introducing Unifi with Microsoft Dynamics

Another digital tool that has come onto the scene in this past 9 years is Microsoft’s CRM and ERP tool, Dynamics 365. Dynamics offers a combined suite of tools, designed to empower your organisation to improve sales, financial management and operational excellence. The introduction of Dynamics is just one example of how integration and scalability have become must-haves for digital business tools over the past 9 years.

Mass Migration to The Cloud

The accelerated adoption of Cloud by many businesses over the last two years has been driven by the need to work seamlessly and securely wherever employees are based. Hybrid working becoming the well recognised buzz word for this flexibility. However the wider benefits of Cloud extend well beyond remote or flexible work patterns. The desire for better integration, enterprise feature sets and a comprehensive reduction in the management of complex server estates all being drivers for this prior to the lockdown events of 2020 and 2021.

Of course, with hybrid working comes the need for even greater security and controls that address the emerging cyber threats targeted at cloud-based data and processes.

Co-Managed Services

Over the last 5 years we have seen significant growth in businesses adopting a strategy of co-managed support services and this is reflected in some industry polls with Co-managed IT being the only growing function, whilst full insourced or outsourced IT services are both in decline. This research is not surprising as co-managed utilises the best from the inhouse teams, combining seamlessly with an outsourced service partner to provide a single highly professional and skilled support service to a business. Zero Trust Security

With more organisations moving to the cloud, it has become imperative for businesses to understand what protection their cloud provider offers and what they must seek elsewhere. Whilst technology has seen great evolution over the past 9 years, unfortunately so has the sophistication of cyberthreats. With the most recent security pushes being the implementation of passwordless authentication and an encouragement to plan security next steps using the Zero Trust security model.

Addressing Digital Burnout

Of course, with a large shift to digitised processes comes new variations on workplace concerns, with one key example being digital burn out. The last few years have seen tools such as Microsoft Viva enter the marketplace to support organisations and individuals in prioritising wellbeing in their working plans and operations.

Moving Into the New Era: AI and Bots

Where 9 years ago cloud migration and no-code technologies were beginning to present the maturity that we accept as standard for working solutions today, now, in our most recent years, we are seeing the early development and maturation of new tools, RPA and bots. These tools offer new ways to support consistent and repetitive processes and relieve teams of unnecessary workload, further supporting the recent push surrounding employee wellbeing in the digital age.
